A Pirate's Life for Me
The Free City of Durez
Durez is one of the largest cities in the known world; it has a population of around 700,000. This port is one of the oldest on the continent and the most economically significant city in the world. Hundreds of tonnes of goods are shipped through this port daily. It is said that a person could acquire anything he could think of so long as he had the gold.
Established as a part of the Abene Empire, it was created a Free City thirty years ago as a result of The Great War against the Abenese. The Great Coalition hoped to stymie Abenese power through harsh economic penalties. The money generated from this city helped greatly to fuel the Abenese economy, its absence has been staggering. With no remaining sea access the Abene are in a poor position to attempt to regain the city.
Now operating as a republic, Durez’s government consists of a council of 12 and an independently elected head of state known as the Duke. The Duke is elected by the aristocracy to serve a term of 10 years, it is not uncommon for a Duke to rule until his own death. Should a Duke die in office, a member of the Durez Council is voted temporary ruler by the other eleven members of the council until an election can be organised for the larger aristocracy.
